Jury Service
Telephone Number
Many of the cases, both Civil
and Criminal, are settled a day or two before the day of trial, therefore
eliminating the need for Jurors to report for Jury Service. In an effort
to avoid having Jurors make unnecessary trips to the Courthouse, and as
a general convenience to Jurors, the Jury Commission Clerk has installed a message
machine in her office, containing a recorded message. The recorded message
will inform you whether or not to report for Jury Service on the designated
date. The telephone number is 432-9361.
For cases scheduled to commence
on Monday, the recorded message will be activated at 4:00 p.m. on the
immediately prior Friday and will be functional throughout the weekend.
For cases scheduled to commence on Tuesday through Friday, the recorded
message will be activated at 4:00 p.m. on the immediately preceding day.
Emergency or Illness
If you should become ill, or in there Is a death or a grave illness in
your family, or if a similarly serious problem should arise, you or some
responsible person on your behalf must call the Jury Commission Clerk at 432-9361 and request
an excuse from reporting on the designated date for Jury Service. Only
the Judge is authorized to grant this type of excuse from Jury Service.
Schedule
Conflict
If you have any other scheduled
conflict, that cannot reasonably be overcome, (for example a business
trip or vacation) you, personally must notify Judge Ellwood in writing
to secure a temporary excuse from reporting on the designated date. Please
include your phone number in your request. As indicated above, only the
Judge is authorized to grant this type of temporary excuse from Jury Service.
However, requests for an excuse are to be submitted through the Jury Commission Clerk's office.
Schedule
of Fees
Jurors will receive $15 for
each day they report to the Guernsey County Courthouse for Jury Service,
regardless of whether or not they are selected to serve as a Juror. Further,
no provision has been made by Ohio law for the payment of mileage. If
you are not selected, your check will be mailed to you by the Clerk of
Courts. If you are selected, your check will be given to you upon completion
of your service.
Parking
You may park in the lot behind
the Courthouse or on the street, if necessary. If you receive a parking

Miscellaneous
There is some waiting time
during trials, so you might want to bring something to occupy your time.
Also, due to the high ceilings in the Courtroom, it is sometimes hard
to adjust the temperature. You may want to bring a sweater.
This Court handles criminal,
civil and domestic cases. Most often our jury trials extend beyond the
one day indicated. Please keep this in mind when scheduling around your
jury service date. Most jury trial average two to three days in length.
