Veteran's Services

When the peace treaty is signed, the war isn't over for the veterans, or the family. It's just starting.

“While only one day of the year is dedicated solely to honoring our veterans, Americans must never forget the sacrifices that many of our fellow countrymen have made to defend our country and protect our freedoms.”

Crisis Counseling

Veterans Crisis Line: 800-273-TALK (8255)
Description:
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has established a national Veterans Crisis
Line to ensure that Veterans in emotional crisis have free, 24/7 access to trained counselors. To operate the Hotline,
the VA partnered with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Suicide
Prevention Lifeline. Veterans, family members, and friends can call the Lifeline number, 800-273-TALK (8255), and press “1”
to be routed to the Hotline and speak to a counselor about any issue that is creating a crisis situation in his or her life.

How Can We Help?

We Provide These Basic Services

1. Temporary emergency financial aid and assistance to eligible veterans and family members who have demonstrated a need as set forth by the commission.
2. Assist veterans, family members and survivors when applying to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for benefits.
3. Transportation to and from VA Medical Center facilities in Cleveland (Wade Park), Canton CBOC and the Chillicothe VAMC.

Financial Assistance Program

The Guernsey County Veterans Service Commission (VSC) provides EMERGENCY financial assistance on a TEMPORARY basis to eligible veterans and their dependents for basic living expenses such as:
• Rent or mortgage
• Utility bills
• Food
• Necessities of life, etc.

The program is not intended to be used on a month to month or extended basis and is provided to those who make a conscientious effort to find a permanent solution to their financial problems. While you may request help for a specific need, the Guernsey County Veterans Service Commission will determine what assistance may be granted.

Each application shall be determined on its own merits in accordance with the intent of Chapter 5901 of the Ohio Revised Code and pursuant to the policies and procedures as established by the Guernsey County Veterans Service Commission.

Indigent Burial

Financial assistance may be available for the burial of a veteran and eligible family members if the individual or individuals responsible for the last expenses of the deceased veteran can not defray the cost of burial.

Transportation Services
We provide transportation services for veterans who have appointments at VA medical facilities in Cleveland, Canton, and Chillicothe Ohio. Space on our van can be reserved by calling our office in advance. Veterans must be ambulatory and able to get in and get out of the van without the assistance of the driver. Medical appointments are to be made no later than 12 o’clock noon to minimize waiting time.
